This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a partnership involving major insurers Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, along with telehealth provider Leafwell and cannabis affordability advocate Bennabis.

Key Features of the Program

Inclusive Access to Cannabis Treatment

The plan enables municipal and school district employees to use medical cannabis as an alternative or complement to traditional treatments for conditions such as:

Chronic pain

Anxiety

Arthritis

Insomnia

PTSD

Side effects of cancer treatment

Telehealth and Convenience

Employees can leverage Leafwell’s telehealth services to consult with healthcare professionals specializing in cannabis-based treatments.

Affordability Focus

With Bennabis’s involvement, the program aims to make medical cannabis products more financially accessible.

Significance of the Initiative

This first-of-its-kind group health plan reflects a shift toward integrating cannabis into mainstream healthcare benefits. It sets a precedent for:

Reducing Stigma: Treating cannabis as a legitimate therapeutic option fosters acceptance and normalizes its use.

Promoting Health Equity: Providing affordable access to cannabis treatments helps address disparities in healthcare.

Comprehensive Wellness: Incorporating cannabis supports mental and physical health alongside traditional medicine.

Emily Fisher, CEO of Leafwell, emphasized the significance, stating, “This partnership ensures patients in New Jersey and beyond have access to care they need, and that medical cannabis is recognized as a powerful tool for health and wellness.”

Decline in Medicinal Cannabis Enrollment

Despite New Jersey's medical marijuana program being established over a decade ago, enrollment has dropped significantly—from 128,548 patients to 68,000—since the state began adult-use sales in 2022.

By integrating cannabis into employer-sponsored health plans, this initiative may reignite interest in medical marijuana, particularly for those seeking targeted therapeutic benefits.

A Broader Vision for Cannabis in Healthcare

The New Jersey program could serve as a model for incorporating cannabis into everyday healthcare. By ensuring affordability and access, the initiative paves the way for a healthier, more inclusive workforce while challenging misconceptions about cannabis use.

As Leafwell’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. June Chin highlighted, “Our goal is a healthcare system that is just, equitable, and inclusive, where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the therapeutic potential of medical cannabis.”
