The stop occurred on Monday night after the vehicle was observed speeding.
Following the stop, the driver was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), and authorities uncovered cannabis in quantities sufficient to support a possession-for-sale charge.
In addition to the cannabis, officers also discovered a baby spider monkey inside the luxury vehicle. The monkey, believed to be approximately one month old, was dressed in a pink onesie. Animal Control was called to take custody of the exotic animal.
Spider monkeys primarily inhabit tropical rainforests from Mexico to Bolivia, but trafficking of these animals into California has been reported. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, instances of illegal transport of spider monkeys have occurred, including the discovery of three baby monkeys at a U.S. border checkpoint last year.
California law prohibits the possession and transport of exotic animals, including spider monkeys. Other animals illegal to own under state regulations include hedgehogs and squirrels.
The driver was booked into Madera County Jail and faces multiple charges, including DUI, possession of cannabis for sale, and illegal possession of an exotic animal. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
