California issues list of approved pesticides for cannabis cultivation

California regulators have released a list of 261 pesticide products approved for use on cannabis products.

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation issued the guidance following a challenging year for the state’s cannabis industry and its primary regulator, the Department of Cannabis Control, which has been dealing with a prolonged pesticide-related issue.

The incident has impacted trust in the world’s largest regulated marijuana market, raised doubts about testing lab reliability, and prompted licensed operators to adopt stricter vetting protocols for single-source suppliers.

The approved pesticide list can be accessed online.

When marijuana legalization occurred in California, the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) set specific criteria for legal pesticide use in cultivation.

Approved pesticides must meet the following criteria:

Assessed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or DPR as a minimum-risk product deemed safe, effective, and exempt from federal pesticide-residue-tolerance requirements.

Products exempt from residue tolerance requirements that comply with registered label instructions.

The DPR emphasized that pesticides used on cannabis, including minimum-risk products, must follow all applicable label, regulatory, and legal requirements. This includes guidelines for use, storage, disposal, and personal protective equipment for applicators.
