Controversial San Francisco church doing $6.1 billion giveaway for Election Day

In an unconventional show of support for Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential bid, Pastor Dave Hodges of the psychedelic Church of Ambrosia in Oakland is offering free magic mushrooms to anyone who signs a “Pledge of Unity” on Election Day.

Although the pledge doesn’t mention Harris specifically, Hodges stated to SFGATE that he is inspired by her potential to unite the country. “I think she is the only one who can bring us together,” he said, contrasting her approach with what he described as divisive tactics from former President Donald Trump.

Eligible voters who sign the pledge will receive 3.5 grams of psilocybin mushrooms—a controlled substance with hallucinogenic properties. While psilocybin remains illegal under federal law, Bay Area authorities have largely de-emphasized enforcement in recent years, allowing psychedelic churches like Hodges' Zide Door and Church of Ambrosia to operate. Hodges claims over 115,000 members across his Oakland and San Francisco congregations, where members can purchase psychedelics as a religious sacrament.

The initiative stems from Hodges' desire to inspire unity. "To me, the pledge of unity means supporting all politicians who can bring us together,” Hodges explained, adding that he believes divisions such as borders and races are human-made illusions. He was also motivated by Elon Musk’s recent offer of $1 million in voter registration cash prizes, though the U.S. Department of Justice cautioned that such initiatives could legally be seen as incentivizing votes.
