Elton John Called the Legalization of Marijuana in America and Canada ‘One of the Greatest Mistakes of All Time’

Elton John, renowned for his decades-long musical career and personal journey toward sobriety, did not hold back in criticizing the legalization of marijuana in the U.S. and Canada. Speaking to Time magazine, which named him its 2024 Icon of the Year, John discussed his battle with addiction and his strong stance against legal cannabis.

“I maintain that it’s addictive. It leads to other drugs,” John said. “And when you’re stoned — and I’ve been stoned — you don’t think normally. Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”

A Personal Perspective on Addiction

John’s views on marijuana are deeply influenced by his own experiences with substance abuse, particularly his struggles with cocaine in the 1970s and 1980s. He described how drugs clouded his judgment and led him to make poor life choices, particularly in relationships.

“You make terrible decisions on drugs,” John explained. “I wanted love so badly, I’d just take hostages… It really upsets me, thinking back on how many people I probably hurt.”

A Legacy of Helping Others

Since achieving sobriety, John has dedicated himself to aiding others in overcoming addiction. He served as a sponsor for Eminem and encouraged British pop star Robbie Williams to seek help in rehab. However, not all of his efforts were successful; John expressed sorrow over being unable to help his late friend George Michael.

“It’s tough to tell someone that they’re being an asshole, and it’s tough to hear,” John said, recalling his own journey toward accountability and sobriety.

A Controversial Stance

John’s remarks are likely to spark debate, given the growing acceptance and legalization of marijuana in many parts of the world. Advocates argue for its medical benefits, economic potential, and role in criminal justice reform. However, critics, like John, highlight concerns about addiction, mental health, and impaired decision-making.

By intertwining his personal history with addiction and his broader critique of legalized marijuana, Elton John has added a unique and candid voice to the ongoing conversation surrounding drug policy
