Ascend, which is based in New York, was fined $85,000 by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) on Thursday. According to The Boston Globe, the fine was issued because the company left around 900 marijuana products out of the state's required track-and-trace system. The problems date back to 2021 and also included issues like unsealed gaps in doors and ducts, as well as workplace problems that led to three cannabis samples being contaminated.
Curaleaf didn’t escape penalties either. The CCC fined them $80,000, also on Thursday, due to "systemic failures" in controlling pesticide contamination at their cultivation sites in Amesbury and Webster, as reported by The Globe.
In other news, the CCC is expected to wrap up its search for a new executive director by the end of October, according to the State House News Service. Bruce Stebbins was appointed as the acting chair of the agency back in September after the former chair, Shannon O'Brien, was fired for what was described as "gross misconduct" and being “unable to discharge the powers and duties of a CCC commissioner.”
