All eight were convicted on or before March 13, 2024, for nonjuvenile offenses related to marijuana possession, including the misdemeanor of possession of marijuana, attempted possession of marijuana, or conspiracy to possess marijuana.

Massachusetts legalized marijuana in 2016, permitting adults aged 21 and older to possess up to one ounce and cultivate up to six plants for personal use. The state's first licensed marijuana store opened in November 2018. In November 2024 alone, Massachusetts recorded over $150 million in legal marijuana sales.
