Massachusetts voters have rejected a measure to legalize natural psychedelic drugs, marking a setback for the expanding movement to legalize psychedelics nationwide.

The proposal would have allowed adults 21 and older to use psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms at licensed therapy centers and to grow small amounts for personal use at home. This initiative followed successful legalization efforts in Oregon and Colorado, where voters approved similar measures with the support of New Approach PAC, a national advocacy group investing heavily in these campaigns.
Opposition from several major medical associations argued that psychedelics could be harmful, especially for individuals at risk for schizophrenia or psychosis, and raised concerns about potential growth of an unregulated black market. Advocates, however, highlighted research showing psychedelics’ promising effects in treating conditions like depression and PTSD, an argument that has gained traction with the public in some states but failed to sway voters in Massachusetts this time.
New Approach PAC is expected to continue pushing for psychedelic legalization in other states.
