Published in *The American Journal on Addictions*, the study emphasizes the need for better education on the risks of marijuana use during pregnancy, highlighting its potential to lead to low birth weight, premature birth, and developmental issues in the fetus.

Dr. Mohammad Rifat Haider, the study’s lead researcher, pointed out that while marijuana is sometimes perceived as helpful for nausea relief—especially in states where medical marijuana is legal—the risks outweigh the benefits during pregnancy.

Most users in the study were in their first trimester, likely using marijuana to alleviate morning sickness. Haider advises that pregnant women should instead consult their doctors for safe anti-nausea medications.

The study also found that mental health issues, including depression, were linked to higher marijuana use during pregnancy, underscoring the need for comprehensive substance use screenings by healthcare providers.

Haider advocates for clear policy and educational outreach, particularly in states with legal medical marijuana, to ensure pregnant women understand the risks.

The research team, including contributors from the CDC, University of Kentucky, and Ohio University, urges state policymakers to enhance educational efforts for this vulnerable population, stressing that marijuana use during pregnancy is detrimental to both mother and child.
