If the packaging is unsealed, the marijuana must be placed in the trunk or glove box.
The law, which mirrors open container regulations for alcohol, is designed to prevent impaired driving.
However, pro-cannabis advocates argue the measure is a step backward for marijuana policy in the state.
Tim Egan of the New Hampshire Cannabis Association criticized the law, suggesting it targets individuals who travel to neighboring states like Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont to purchase cannabis.
Supporters of legalization point out that New Hampshire loses an estimated $50 million annually in revenue to these states.
Currently, 24 states have legalized recreational cannabis.
