Despite its small size, the Green Mountain State has the highest percentage of pot users, reflecting its long-standing history with both recreational (legal since 2018) and medical cannabis (legal for two decades).
Following Vermont, Alaska ranks second, with 22% of residents consuming cannabis. The top five states for cannabis use are rounded out by Oregon, New Mexico, and Washington. While states like California are known for their cannabis culture and sales, it surprisingly ranks 20th on the list, with only 15% of Californians reporting cannabis use. This may be due to the fact that many areas in California still ban dispensaries, or perhaps other lifestyle trends, like wine consumption, play a bigger role in certain regions.
As cannabis markets continue to expand and federal reforms are considered, the number of Americans using cannabis is expected to rise further, reflecting the broader cultural shift toward acceptance of marijuana.
