President-elect Donald Trump announced that he has selected Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., as his nominee for Attorney General, a choice that surprised many in Congress. Gaetz, a staunch Trump supporter known for his vocal defense of the former president during his time on the House Judiciary Committee, will assume leadership of the Department of Justice if confirmed by the Senate.

Trump shared his announcement on Truth Social, praising Gaetz’s role in exposing what he described as government overreach and corruption, particularly highlighting Gaetz's role in the investigations he calls the "Russia Hoax." Trump also noted Gaetz's strong advocacy for the Constitution and rule of law as qualifications for the post.

Gaetz, who graduated from William & Mary College of Law and joined the Florida Bar in 2008, acknowledged the nomination on X, formerly Twitter, calling it an "honor" to serve as Trump’s Attorney General. Gaetz has faced scrutiny in the past due to an investigation by the House Ethics Committee over alleged sexual misconduct with a minor, which he has repeatedly denied and refused to engage with voluntarily.

While some lawmakers expressed surprise, Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., chair of the House Ethics Committee, stated that their investigation into Gaetz would automatically close if he leaves Congress, as their jurisdiction applies only to active members. Guest further expressed confidence in Trump’s selection process, saying he trusted the president-elect's judgment.

Gaetz’s nomination follows speculation that Trump would prioritize loyalty for top cabinet posts. Former Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Trump would want someone he personally trusts in such a high-stakes role. Gaetz’s path to confirmation is expected to be smooth in the GOP-controlled Senate, despite the previous ethical concerns.
