Nelson, a long-time advocate for cannabis legalization, expressed his support in a statement from **Ground Game Texas**, a nonprofit group leading the reform effort. He highlighted the need for "fairness and freedom," calling for an end to the criminalization of cannabis in Texas.
Proposition R, also known as the **Dallas Freedom Act**, will be on the November ballot. If passed, it would decriminalize the possession of less than **four ounces of cannabis** for adults 21 and older. The measure also includes a requirement for the police chief and city manager to submit quarterly reports to the city council on any marijuana-related arrests or citations, promoting transparency and accountability.
Nelson's support draws attention to the personal impact of Texas’ strict cannabis laws, citing his own numerous arrests, including a notable 1974 arrest in Dallas. He founded the **Teapot Party** in 2010, advocating for the taxation, regulation, and legalization of cannabis.
Ground Game Texas’ **Catina Voellinger** emphasized the significance of this endorsement, noting that Nelson, like many Texans, has been affected by cannabis-related arrests. Between **2018 and 2023**, nearly **200,000 Texans** were arrested for cannabis possession. Voellinger pointed out that the proposed reform is not just about marijuana but also part of a broader effort toward social justice and smarter resource allocation in law enforcement.
This initiative also aims to reduce the legal risks for veterans who use cannabis for PTSD treatment and ensure future generations avoid legal repercussions for minor possession. **Proposition R** reflects a growing movement across Texas for more equitable and rational cannabis policies.
